MINUTES OF THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION PETT DISTRICT BRANCH MEETING
Held on Tuesday 9th January 2018 at 1200 noon
The Fairlight Lodge Hotel, Fairlight Road, Fairlight, East Sussex.
1 Opening
The Exhortation and Kohima Epitaph were recited and a period of silence was observed.
2 Chairman: JP welcomed all those in attendance and told the members monies raised Nationally was £34,661,160.44 and Sussex £1,089,912.18 Pett District had raised £5,450.59 during the Poppy Appeal but to date the figure is £6,501.00. JP welcomes Marjorie Rowson and her friend to the meeting and informed them Frank Rowson had been our Chaplain prior to his current indisposition. JB gave both ladies a membership form in the hope they would join the branch.
JP then asked The President (EH) to make his proposal. EH began by bringing to the members notice the amount of work which Tony King our previous many times Secretary and Chairman had done for the RBL, he said that during their long association with the Legion they had worked together almost all the years they had been members, for this steadfast work he would like to propose that Tony King be made a Vice President, this was seconded by JB all members agreed and congratulated TK. When asked how long he had been a member of the Legion TK replied 25 years. Both Tony and Eric had great input into The History of the Branch which is available to be loaned by members.
EH proposed the CD, of the laying up of the previous Standard, which he now has taken from an old Video, should be seen by the members, and suggested this might make a nice event with a lunch or dinner.
Carols and Cake, on 12th December 2017, raised £95.00.
3 Apologies for Absence: – Ken and Joan Hall, Trevor Lee, Andy Haslam, Eric and Sylvia Gladman, Brenda Ridley, and Elizabeth Manwaring
4 Minutes of the last meeting: – There were no minutes on this occasion as the October Minutes were read prior to the AGM held in November these were distributed and will be read at the next AGM November 2018.
5 Matters Arising: Item 4 above explains why there were no matters arising.
6 New Members: There were no new members.
7 Reports:
- Treasurer:
JB reported Deposit account £1002.76, plus 18p.making £1002.94 Current account £18.38, Cash in hand £131.81. The Treasurer (JB) had nothing further to report.
- Membership Secretary NTR
- Secretary and Correspondence The Secretary said the only official paper this month is the New year branch officers List which now shows Tony King as a Vice President. These were distributed. Also distributed were the AGM minutes via email, there being two exceptions Eric Hollingsworth and Joyce Groves who do not have computers. The Secretary continued by saying on the membership list there were many members who did not have access to computers and who never got any information from the branch. She went on to say, as her new year resolution, she had decided to write to these people, to ask if they would be interested to read the minutes and perhaps attend some of our functions, if not then she would not bother them but those who might be interested would receive these by post on a monthly basis. Certainly at a little cost to the branch but perhaps would bring some of these members back into the fold.
The new Standard Bearer, Richard Boulter begins his training on Thursday 25th January with the Deputy Parade Marshall, Ray Collins who has kindly offered to come to Fairlight Lodge for this training day.
Christmas Lunch on 5th December, was I believe, a great success and enjoyed by all those who attended. Also in December we had the Carols and Cake which JP has already mentioned and another enjoyable morning with lovely cakes.
The discussed group Trip to the National Memorial Arboretum will be looked into this month and the Secretary will come back with times, days and prices then ask who might be interested in attending this overnight outing due to the long distance.
25th February the Hailsham Branch is inviting all branches in Sussex and their Standard Bearers to The Earl Haig Commemorative Ceremony they are organizing. It is to be held at St. Mary’s, Hailsham, Parish Church, Vicarage Road, Hailsham BN27 1BJ and Muster of Standards at 14.30 the ceremony commences at 15.00. Free parking at the Waitrose car park behind the church in Vicarage Lane. There will be refreshments available in the Church Lounge. Should you be interested in attending, I will need to know by Monday 24th January.
The Legion’s Independent Living Service was read to members, they had already received copies via the email system.
- Branch Community Support – Fairlight
JV still keeps in touch with Velma Richards regarding the health of her husband, as for Michael nothing has really changed and he keeps fairly well. Frank Rowson is very settled in Hastings Court which was good to hear. JV also mention Brenda Ridley who is very poorly at present.
The members were delighted to hear about the award given to Juliette Vane for all her hard work bringing together the Polish/British Air Force veterans at her annual service in Ninfield.
JV mentioned decorating Churches and Schools with poppies that would have to be made by crocheting.
Pett & Pett Level – BG – NTR.
- Poppy Organiser’s Report was handed to all members.
JP last October asked if there were any members who would be willing to take on board one of the Poppy Collectors rounds – he was much appreciative of the offers from both Jill Dighton and Elizabeth Manwaring, Jill in November took on part of the round of Channel Way and helped Sylvia Gladman make 40 special poppies from old wreaths, this had been requested by our President EH and was gladly accepted, as he is no longer able to do this job himself. These Poppies were offered as a donation to the Poppy Appeal.
EH gave a Vote of thanks to JP for his work on the Poppy Appeals project.
JP thanked Maggie Boulter and her team for the free use of the venue and also for the many coffees.
8 Any other business:
JP notified the members 2018 was the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force.
9 The next meeting is at The Fairlight Lodge Hotel, Fairlight Road, Fairlight on Tuesday 6th February 2018 at 11.45 for 1200 Noon.
10 Meeting closed at 12.45 – 14 members attended.
Today’s raffle raised £16.00
After the close of the meeting Jeff Frost, who did a sponsored bicycle ride, from London 02 Arena to Paris raising personally £1400, gave a presentation to the members. Jeff and his wife Marion joined us all for a light lunch. After lunch Jeff began his talk by telling us there were some 300 plus riders, they were divided into three teams, fast, medium and slow. The facilities offered during the ride were very good, they wanted for nothing, B and B’s or hotels were organised, food on the way, evening meals, cycle repairs, just everything you wanted. The talk was very interesting.
