Pett Village Hall Committee: 3 September meeting – update (revised Tuesday 11 September)

The Pett Village Hall Management Committee met on Monday 3 September. The draft minutes of the meeting will be posted on Pett on the Net soon in the usual way, but there are a number of issues  and dates for the diary that the Committee thought would be helpful to mention now.

The Committee had hoped to hold a Jumble Sale in aid of the Village Hall on Saturday 3 November. but this will not now be going ahead.  But there will be a Quiz Night at the Village Hall on that date, with David Penfold putting the questions, starting at 7.00pm with a bring your own supper followed by the quiz at 7.30 pm. Details of how to book a place are available on a separate post on the website.

On Friday 23 November we are planning to hold a Jazz Night at the Village Hall, admission £10 (accompanied under-16s free), with cabaret type seating, from 8.00pm – 10.00pm, courtesy of the Ian Millar and Dominic Spencer Jazz duo, who have just finished a successful season at the Edinburgh Fringe.

More details to follow.

On Saturday 24 November the Village Hall Committee will be holding their annual Craft Fair. Carol Pecorini and Carol Glasson are taking bookings now – see separate post on the website.

The Committee carefully considered whether they should hold a Halloween Night in October, but reluctantly have decided that, given other issues that the new Committee are dealing with, they are not in a position to organise it this year. They are sorry to disappoint but will consider holding the event next year.

The Committee noted that bookings are coming in thick and fast for 2019, and the calendar of bookings made so far (including those for all the regular groups and societies) will be published on Pett on the Net as soon as possible.

Following a problem that arose with a recent booking, the Committee have decided to ask hall users, including those holding children’s parties, not to use glitter as it is very difficult to clean off from the hall floor and the carpets. The Committee have also been asked to consider banning helium balloons from the hall on environmental grounds. Whilst understanding the reasons behind the request, the Committee are reluctant to impose bans on grounds other than health and safety or the wellbeing of the hall (e.g. glitter!). But they have agreed to ask users to consider carefully whether it is appropriate to use helium balloons, and that if they do so, they do not release them in the hall or outside of the hall, but take the balloons home with them. The conditions of hire for the hall will be amended to reflect those decisions.

Finally, the Committee are following the lead of the Parish Council and will now be holding their meetings on a bi-monthly basis, rather than every month. Much of the Committee’s business is done outside of the formal meetings through email and telephone calls and talking to hall users and potential users. The Committee are always happy to respond to any issues that arise between meetings. The next Committee meeting will therefore be held on Monday 5 November, starting at 7.00pm. As usual, everyone will be welcome to attend.
