Knit for Peace – Another Example

Another example of Knit for Peace – this time it is Jennifer Grist who knitted the squares and crocheted them together – we are making several of these to send to Knit for Peace who distributes items like these to women’s refuges, refugee drop-in centres, prisons, community groups and hospices as well as developing countries and refugee camps.
Each item requires 112 squares of knitting so if anyone would like to help there is wool available – details also in the Pett and Pett Level News.

Pett Community Library Notes – October 2020

We were extremely lucky that the first Wednesday in October was fine and dry, especially as it was sandwiched between two very wet days. Consequently, we were able to set up the library outside again, so making it easier to comply with health restrictions. And it was great to welcome back the Coffee Morning, waitress service included!!

The Jigsaw Library has quickly become very popular and there is more information elsewhere about jigsaws available and how you can access them.

Crochet Corner where you can learn to knit or crochet has not quite made it back yet, but we are always delighted to see what you are making.

Heather Godwin brought along wool and squares for her “Knit For Peace” project and Gillian Quick modelled (see below) the amazing dressing-gown she has made, which is what the squares are intended for.

Knit for Peace

As we are asked so often, it is worth mentioning once again that we do not sell books and cannot take your old books. This is a borrowing library, essentially set up to replace the mobile library, run by volunteers – us. The books are a County Library resource – a collection of about 7,000 books set aside for local Community Libraries and from which we regularly make a new selection. It doesn’t cost anything to borrow a book; we simply need your name and contact details and for you to sign a Data Protection form.

It was also good to welcome some new faces, which is marvellous encouragement for us to keep going. So do keep coming along and supporting the Village Coffee Morning, meeting up with friends old and new and supporting the Village Hall. Next Coffee Morning and Community Library: Wednesday 4th November, 10 – 12. Hope to see you there!!

Rother District Council: Self-isolation support grants

Self-isolation support grants

From Friday, people who are on low incomes and are required to self-isolate can access a new support payment via our website or by contacting our Customer Service colleagues.

Under the scheme a payment of £500 will ensure that those on low incomes are able to self-isolate without worry about their finances.

Those who start to self-isolate from 28 September will receive backdated payments.

To be eligible residents must:

  • have been asked to self-isolate (on or after 28 September) by NHS Test and Trace either because you have  tested positive for coronavirus or have recently been in close contact with someone who has tested positive
  • be employed or self-employed
  • be unable to work from home and will lose income as a result
  • be currently receiving Universal Credit, Working Tax Credit, income-based Employment and Support Allowance, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit and/or Pension Credit

The payment will be made in one lump sum and will be subject to Income Tax.

In order to apply residents will need to provide the following evidence:

  • A notification from NHS Test & Trace asking you to self-isolate (including your unique ID number)
  • A bank statement
  • Proof of employment, or if you are self-employed, self-employment assessment returns, trading income and proof that you cannot work from home and will lose income as a result.

Discretionary Scheme

There is also a discretionary fund for individuals who meet the above criteria but are not receiving a qualifying benefit.

Applicants must also meet the following additional criteria in order to qualify for a payment from this scheme:

  • Are suffering financial hardship as a result of having to self-isolate
  • Have less than £3000 in capital or savings
  • Normally earning more than £80 per week but less than £290 per week

Visit our website for more information.

Bus Service Update

I am writing with further news regarding the East Sussex Highways works in the Fairlight area and its effect on bus services.

I understand that the re-surfacing work that commenced last Monday has been proceeding well despite the wet weather. You will recall that this was generally working westwards. We understand that the work is due to clear the Lower Coastguard Lane junction imminently, as scheduled, with work continuing in Fairlight Road west of there from next Monday.

Accordingly, we have told Hams Travel to resume extending the relevant journeys on the 901 shuttle bus timetable to/from Lower Coastguard Lane from Monday 12 October. The section of route between there and Fairlight Cove had to be withdrawn from 22 September to permit ‘haunching’ works which were then followed by the re-surfacing activities over the last week. The afternoon journey on service 347 that serves Fairlight will also be extended again to Lower Coastguard Lane from the same date.
